As cyclone Ockhi continues its strong presence over the Arabian sea, the well marked low pressure area remains stationary over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman sea on Monday. This would mean rainfall would take a break over most parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Tuesday.
According to India Meteorological Department, the very severe cyclonic storm ‘Ockhi’ is likely to cross south Gujarat and adjoining north Maharashtra coasts by Tuesday night.
As the cyclone is likely to weaken gradually, the weather system over the Bay of Bengal may pick up pace and become a depression by Tuesday.
Officials of the Meteorological department said there may not be significant rainfall on Tuesday over the State. During the past 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday, Aranmanaipudur in Theni district received the highest volume of 6 cm of rainfall.
S. Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said the weather system has a potential to become a depression by early hours of Tuesday and move towards north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coast. It is likely to develop into a deep depression by December 7.
There may be an increase in rainfall over the State from Wednesday. “On Tuesday, one or two places over Tamil Nadu may get moderate showers. There would be more cloud cover over Chennai and light rain may occur in some places. We are monitoring the system for extent of rainfall it would bring over the State as it moves closer,” he said.
Advice against fishing
Fishermen are advised not to venture into deep sea for fishing in Bay of Bengal and Andaman Nicobar islands, Mr. Balachandran added.
The department has also warned that strong winds from north-easterly direction with a speed reaching 55 kmph is likely to blow along and off Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.
