Last day for withdrawing nominations today

The total number of candidates who will be contesting in all the 234 constituencies across the State will be known on Monday as it is the last day for withdrawing nominations.

As on Sunday (at 8 pm), only 4,175 of the 7,158 nominations received between April 22 and 29 were accepted and the 2,983 were rejected on the day of scrutiny on Saturday.

During the 2011 Assembly polls, 1,227 of the 4,306 nominations filed were rejected and another 331 were withdrawn before the polling day. Of the 2,748 candidates who faced the elections, over 2,270 forfeited deposit.

A total of 3,902 nominations were filed during 2006 Assembly polls and of them, over 1,000 were rejected and 291 were withdrawn.

The State is set to witness a five-cornered contest with the AIADMK, the DMK-Congress, the PWF-DMDK-TMC, PMK and the BJP contesting against each other for the May 16 Assembly polls.
