The inadequate services at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital have come under the State Human Rights Commission's scanner.
Taking cognisance of a complaint which had been filed based on a news report in The Hindu dated May 23, the Commission's Acting Chairperson, K. Baskaran, has ordered the hospital's dean and the Director of Medical Education to send a report within four weeks.
In the complaint, K. Sudhan, advocate, said the report had stated that the hospital was not equipped to support all its patients. A newborn should be placed in an elevated position so that he/she does not get infected. But in the neonatal intensive care unit at KMC, infants could be found on the floor with six to seven warmers not in a usable condition, lined alongside the walls. Mr. Sudhan said he had filed the complaint on behalf of the patients of the neo-natal ward with a view to protecting their human rights.
The newborns were being exposed to avoidable infections, he added.
