The relatives of 36-year-old S. Baskaran who died at Government Stanley Hospital on Saturday, a couple of days after he had a kidney transplant, have expressed unhappiness with the treatment at the hospital.
Doctors said he suffered a cardiac arrest. The relatives’ concerns rise from the fact that he was one of the 16 patients diagnosed with Hepatitis C at the hospital last August, while undergoing dialysis. His is the second death in the group — another died in February, other patients said.
Mr. Baskaran was taken in for a transplant on Thursday morning. “After the surgery, he complained of body pain, but the nurses said that was normal. Around 5 a.m. on Saturday, I was told he had died,” said his wife, Shantha Kumari.
P. Karkuzhali, dean of Stanley hospital, said Mr. Baskaran’s viral load had come down completely and he was certified fit for transplant surgery. “The transplant was successful. His urine output was good. Unfortunately, he suffered a cardiac arrest and could not be resuscitated,” she said.
