Kabaddi player murdered by team-mate

An 18-year-old kabaddi player from Haryana who had come with his team to Chennai for a tournament was stabbed by his team-mate following a petty quarrel on Sunday night. He died on Monday morning. Police registered a case of murder launched a search for the accused, who was absconding.

According to Periamet police, the deceased, Naveen, was part of a 12-member north zone kabaddi team from Haryana who were in Chennai to play a tournament from August 9 to 11. Around 11.30 p.m. on Sunday Naveen was involved in a petty quarrel with his team-mate Sumeeth (19) over sleeping under the fan at their team room inside the Nehru Stadium in Periamet.

An exchange of words escalated to a fist-fight and Sumeeth stabbed Naveen in the abdomen with his penknife and fled, police said.

Other members of the team rushed Naveen to the Government General Hospital. He succumbed to his injury around 2.45 a.m. on Monday, added police. Periamet police are on the lookout for Sumeeth.
