The intersection in front of the Koyambedu police station on Kaliamman Koil Street has lost its girth, due to unauthorised parking of vehicles and encroachment by hawkers.
Located near the wholesale market in Koyambedu, the intersection witnesses continual movement of goods-laden lorries. These heavy vehicles are parked on both sides of Kaliamman Koil Street. Buses attached to SETC, TNSTC and private travel firms also pass though this junction. Through the day, one can find pedestrians scamper across the intersection, dodging vehicles.
“It’s risky to cross the junction individually. Only as a group can we expect to motorists to halt,” says V. Prakash, a resident of Ashok Nagar.
All of these things takes place in front of the Koyambedu police station. The traffic police regulates the movement of vehicles at the intersection only during rush hour. The rest of the day, motorists and pedestrians cross the junction at their own risk.
“We have limited staff strength and are therefore unable to deploy police personnel at the intersection throughout the day. Steps will however be taken to ensure that the intersection is made safe,” say police sources.
