It is a well accepted fact that modern communication apps and tools such as WhatsApp have brought the world closer. But instant communication comes with imminent danger, a judge of the Madras High Court has warned.
Adjudicating a bail plea bail plea moved by an accused charged with abduction of a minor girl on Wednesday, Justice S. Vaidyanathan said: “WhatsApp users, especially women, need to be careful before placing a picture as their profile photo and while sharing their pictures with their friends or other WhatsApp Groups, as prevention is better than cure.”
The prosecution alleged that the accused, Ajith of Modakkurichi, Erode abducted and raped the victim, a minor girl, and threatened to spread obscene pictures of her through WhatsApp.
Denying bail to the accused given the heinous nature of the crime alleged to have been committed, the judge said, “Cyber crimes, that too through WhatsApp, are increasing day-by-day. Though good messages are also shared through WhatsApp, instances like that of the petitioner herein are quite common nowadays. Technological advancement should be a boon and not be a bane to the existing peaceful living of the mankind.”
