January 17, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 23, 2016 12:53 am IST - CHENNAI:

The ball has been set rolling for the city’s fourth desalination plant to be set up at Perur along East Coast Road (ECR) to meet the growing drinking water needs.

A 14-member team from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) — the Japanese government’s funding agency — is on a visit to the city to scrutinise documents pertaining to the setting up of another desalination plant at Perur along ECR.

The State government had sought funding under JICA to construct the plant with a capacity to treat 400 million litres of water a day.

A detailed project report prepared to establish the plant at a cost of Rs. 4,070 crore was submitted to the Centre.

Scrutinising proposal

On Thursday, the JICA team visited the city to scrutinise the proposal and extend financial assistance for the project.

Chennai Metrowater plans to implement the project within 42 months of award of the contract.

The treated water from the plant will serve nearly 23 lakh people in the southern and central parts of the city.
