Jayalalithaa slams fuel price hike

May 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:54 am IST - CHENNAI:

AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Friday urged the Central government to roll back the recent fuel price hike as it would result in the rise in price of essential commodities, pressuring the poor.

Accusing the BJP government in New Delhi of not passing on the benefits of the fall in international crude oil prices to consumers, she said international investors lost confidence in the Central government’s taxation policies. Consequently, the value of the rupee fell.

The former Chief Minister’s statement comes in the wake of oil marketing companies increasing petrol price by Rs. 3.96 a litre and diesel price by Rs. 2.37 a litre with effect from Thursday midnight. Condemning the price hike, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the increase in fuel price would also result in inflation which, she said, had been under check.

DMK president M. Karunanidhi also condemned the fuel price hike, calling it steep and arbitrary on the part of the Central government.
