Safeer Karim, an IPS probationer, who was caught cheating in the UPSC mains examination and currently lodged in the Central Prison, Puzhal, has been formally placed under suspension, said sources.

On October 28, Karim, a probationer, was found copying with the help of hi-tech devices in the examination held at the Presidency Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Egmore. He was found using a bluetooth device and a mobile phone to get answers from his wife Joicy and Rambabu, from an IAS coaching centre in Hyderabad. Joicy and Rambabu were also arrested.

Samjad and Mohammed Shahib Khan, who allegedly helped Karim to write the preliminary examination in a similar fashion, were arrested in Thiruvanthapuram by the Chennai City Police.

While Joicy was granted bail, all the other four accused, including Karim, have been lodged in Central Prison.

Home Secretary Niranjan Mardi issued an order placing Karim under suspension under the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules. The order was served to him in the prison, and an explanation was sought as to why he should not be dismissed from service for his misconduct.
