‘Instill value of pluralism in students’

February 15, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - CHENNAI:

Educators need to help children understand the importance of the pluralistic nature of the country, said N. Ram, chairman, Kasturi and Sons Limited.

“Education cannot be insulated from society,” he said, speaking at the Educators for Change conference at Don Bosco School of Excellence on Saturday.

IIT-Madras humanities professor Kalpana Karunakaran emphasised the need to unlearn gender stereotypes. “Schools should create spaces where teachers can share their views and anxieties on gender. In turn, they should help students,” she said.

Speaking at a session on technology in education, Lakshmi Narayanan, vice-chairman of Cognizant Technology Solutions, said that students needed constant assessment to help improve their performance. Reverend Father Thomas V. Kunnunkal, former chairman, CBSE and research director of Indian Social Institute, New Delhi, spoke of the need for change in education. “Education needs to be more student-centric, but in order to bring about the change, the focus must be on the teachers,” he said.

The two-day conference was presented by The Hindu In School and The Hindu Young World.
