A male Indian Gaur was killed by a younger gaur in an enclosure at the Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur on Sunday.

Forest staff were clearing branches and other vegetation from an enclosure on Saturday when they saw a fight break out between the gaurs in their enclosure nearby. There are over 20 gaurs in the enclosure.

Ratnam, a 20-year-old Indian gaur, was severely injured in the fight with the younger gaur, Vijay.

Animal keepers intervened to shift the injured gaur to the zoo hospital, where the doctors treated the animal.

But it succumbed to injuries on Sunday morning, according to sources.

This is not the first time a gaur has been killed by another animal at the zoo.

In August 2011, Mani, a 20-year-old gaur, was killed by Vijay, who was six years old then.
