Subra Suresh, Padma Shri awardee and alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, has been selected to head the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore.

Prof. Suresh had served a four-year term as the president of Carnegie Mellon University and demitted office on June 30. He was chosen in 2010 by the then U.S. President Barack Obama to lead the U.S. National Science Foundation.

According to a release from the institute, Prof. Suresh completed his B Tech from IIT-M, which felicitated him with the distinguished alumnus award in 1997.

An eight-member search committee chaired by Mr. Koh Boon Hwee, chairman of the NTU Board of Trustees, unanimously selected Prof. Suresh for the top role at NTU.

At NTU, he will begin his presidency on January 1, 2018. NTU was placed 11th in the world in the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings this year.

IIT-M’s Dean of International and Alumni Relations R. Nagarajan said, “IIT-M has close ties with NTU and is in the process of formalising a joint Ph.D degree programme. Subra’s arrival at NTU augurs well for future interactions and collaborations among our institutions,” he said.
