The government on Friday said no eviction process had been initiated against anybody who had defaulted on housing loan obtained through cooperative housing societies in the State.

Refuting Leader of the Opposition Jayalalithaa's charge that the government had initiated distraint proceedings against defaulters, the government, in a statement said that long-term defaulters were being asked to repay as credit rating of the government would suffer.

Legal steps were initiated against only those belonging to the upper and middle income groups.

All the defaulters were still living in their houses and no move had been taken to evict them.

The government, since 2006, had repaid Rs.750 crore out of the Rs.1,850 crore worth of loans availed from the Tamil Nadu Co-operative Housing Corporation, nationalised banks and Central government institutions, benefiting 4.74 lakh persons, the statement said.
