Just 70 metres away from the residence of the city police commissioner, a house was broken into on Sunday, and burglars escaped with gold jewellery and cash.
The house is one of a section of high income group independent houses, on Nolambur Main Road. Its residents, A. Devaraj, a retired additional director of the finance department, his wife and their two sons had left for Hogenakkal by bus on Saturday morning, with 15 other family members.
“We returned around 11 p.m. on Sunday and found the grill gate cut open and the lock missing. All the 12 doors inside the house, including the kitchen door which we had locked, were broken. The house was ransacked and a total of 85 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs. 50,000 were stolen from cupboards on the ground and first floors,” Mr. Devaraj told The Hindu .
Three or more burglars are suspected to have committed the crime, as a heavy almirah on the ground floor had been lifted and placed flat on a bed nearby, before being broke open. Some other jewellery in another part of the house, a laptop and other electronic equipment were untouched.
The house is close to couple of empty plots, and just a few metres away, are residences of several senior government officials. A police constable from the booth close to Devaraj’s residence had seen the doors of the house wide open on Sunday afternoon. As the grill gate looked like it was locked, he assumed the family was at home.
