Honouring yeoman service in education

S. Gurumurthy, Editor of Thuglak , lauded K.R. Sundararajan as a philanthropist, who dedicated his life to the education of women.

Participating at the Founder’s Day celebration organised by Meenakshi College for Women in the city on Sunday, Mr. Gurumurthy said that Sundararajan, more famously known as Lion Sundararajan, started the college at a time when it was not a very popular cause.

He said that one should remember that the land on which the college stands — measuring around 12 acres — was purchased, unlike in the case of other schools and institutions that got grants of land from governments. “Today, though the land in which the college is housed is valued at several hundreds of crores, the educational trust started by Sundararajan is dedicated to the cause of women’s education. This is evident from the fact that over 44,000 girl students have passed out of the college,” he said.

Mr. Gurumurthy said talking in Tamil was becoming rare these days and wanted the college management to encourage students to speak in their mother tongue. “Talking in Tamil is not about politics but about our culture and customs,” he said, adding that it should also be known that learning English was important.

K.R. Sundararajan’s daughters K.S. Lakshmi, secretary of Ganapathi Educational Trust, and K.S. Babai, secretary, Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College, participated.
