Thirty seven enthusiastic students found an innovative and productive hobby to indulge in this summer. They enrolled in a three-day aero-modelling camp, which started on Tuesday, organised by the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre for school students from classes VII-X. The camp will be conducted by S. Parthasarathy, director of Bharath Electronic Centre, Madurai.

Mithula Shivani, a class VIII student of Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School, dreams of becoming a rocket scientist some day. “The camp was very exciting. The concepts are explained very well. They told us all about the models, pilots, and the programmes used for aero-modelling,” she said.

The prime objective of this workshop, with an entry fee of Rs. 750 per student, is to popularize the field among students interested in pursuing a career in aeronautical sciences. “Air travel is the future mode of transport. We lag behind other developed nations in this field. We have the ability and the knowledge but we lacking talent. We need more children to become pilots, scientists and engineers,” said Mr. Parthasarathy.

On the first day, the basic concepts of different models of aircrafts were explained with the help of videos to teach students the function of the models. In the following days, students will be allowed to fly model aircraft in a simulator session.
