The Madras High Court on Wednesday directed the authorities to file a report on an incident reported in The Hindu about an attempt by college students to celebrate Bus Day.
Passing the order on a public interest litigation petition, the First Bench comprising the Acting Chief Justice R.K. Agrawal and Justice K. Venkataraman, posted the matter for further hearing after two weeks.
The report said that students of Pachaiyappa’s College had attempted to celebrate bus day on Monday; but police reached the spot following an alert by the public.
In the petition, Nethaji Pokkuvarathu Thozhilalargal Pathukappu Thozhir Sangam’s MTC unit, represented by its president, V. Thalapathy, said that in spite of a court order banning bus day celebrations, the practice continued because the government machinery hesitated to deal with misbehaving students. During the celebrations, students took control of the operation of the buses and created problems for other passengers. Considering the situation in which drivers and conductors were placed, he said it was necessary to provide protection for buses.
