The Madras High Court has confirmed the life sentence awarded to a man in connection with an acid attack on a woman at a browsing centre in Adambakkam leading to her death.
A Division Bench of Justices S. Nagamuthu and V. Bharathidasan passed the order while dismissing an appeal moved by the accused, S. Vijay Baskar, assailing the order of a trial court.
According to prosecution, Vijay Baskar, who was working as a catering staff in an IT company at Sholinganallur, was in love with 21-year-old Vidya. He sought approval from her family to marry her. Vidya’s parents accepted the proposal but told Vijay Baskar to wait for three months.
Meanwhile, suspecting that she was in relationship with another person, Vijay Baskar attacked her with acid at an internet browsing centre in Adambakkam where she worked, on January 30, 2013. When she tried to escape from the attack, he grabbed her and rubbed her face on the floor where the acid had been spilt. A month later Vidya succumbed to her injuries.
The Principal District and Sessions Court, Chengalpattu, had slapped the life sentence on Vijay Baskar in 2015.
When the plea came up for hearing, the Bench, pointing out the way the accused inflicted injuries on the victim, said, “The punishment imposed was reasonable and proportionate.”
