A man who allegedly misused the ATM card of a senior citizen and stole Rs.8 lakh was arrested by the Mylapore police here on Wednesday.

According to police sources, Sankaranarayana Moorthy (65) of Tiruchi had come to the city to meet his friend recently. While shopping in the Mylapore area, he lost his ATM card. On reaching Tiruchi a few days later, Mr. Moorthy who checked his cash balance in his bank account found that Rs.8 lakh had been withdrawn through ATMs. He lodged a complaint with the Mylapore police.

A special team formed to investigate got some clues, including the image of the person who drew the money from ATMs, and apprehended Kaninathan (26) of Thiruvanmiyur. The suspect confessed to having committed the crime with the help of the password written on a piece of paper and kept in the ATM card holder. Rs.6 lakh was recovered from his possession, the sources added.
