The city is likely to get heavy rainfall on Tuesday owing to a well-marked low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal, according to the Meteorological Department.
Officials said the rainfall could be as heavy as 7 cm in some places of north costal Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and Puducherry. On Monday, several parts of the city, including Kilpauk, Villivakkam, Chetpet and T.Nagar experienced showers.Officials said that Nungambakkam observatory recorded 4.3 mm of rain while Meenambakkam registered 2.9 mm on Monday. The maximum temperature dropped by two degree Celsius less than the average of 33 degree Celsius. The weather has resulted in soaring vegetable prices. Onions have become dearer with one kg priced at Rs.40 in the Koyambedu wholesale market. Traders said rainfall in various States has led to the hike.
Many vegetables, including beans (Rs.22 per kg), tomato (Rs.18 per kg) and small onions (Rs.27 per kg) cost more. The cost of snake gourd and yam has doubled to Rs.16 a kg, they said. Drumstick, the unseasonal vegetable, costs Rs.60 in wholesale market. A bunch of coriander leaves is priced around Rs.35-40 owing to lesser arrivals. It would take at least a month for prices to come down, traders said.
