Though it is spacious, commuters give the waiting area at the Guduvanchery bus terminus a wide berth. For, it is occupied by beggars, vagabonds and canines. At night, some people turn it into an open bar. Under the benches there, one can see empty liquor bottles. Route numbers M52 (Pozhichalur-Guduvanchery), E18 (Guduvanchery-Broadway), G18 (T. Nagar-Guduvanchery) and G70 (Vadapalani-Guduvanchery) are operated from the terminus.
“The terminus can be easily accessed from GST Road and Kuberan Nagar Second Street. As there are no gates at both entrances, miscreants enter it easily. Men in inebriated condition can be seen lying at the waiting area even during the day. As a result, commuters stand in the open to board their route numbers,” R. Rishi, a commuter said. Except for the vehicles of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC)staff, private vehicles are not supposed to enter the bus terminus.
However, residents of Second Street, Kuberan Nagar, use the terminus as a thoroughfare to avoid the heavy traffic congestion on Grand Southern Trunk Road. They also enter the terminus due to the encroachments on the service lane, abutting the terminus, and haphazard parking of vehicles. “As a few motorcyclists indulge in reckless driving, commuters have to be cautious while boarding or alighting from a bus,” adds Rishi. “Steps will be taken at the earliest to prevent miscreants from using the terminus,” says an MTC official.
