A 70-year-old security guard of a private firm in Ambattur Estate was found murdered on the bank of Puzhal lake on Friday evening.

The police suspect the victim had taken part in a card game with friends and was killed following an argument.

Ambattur police sources said the guard, Velayutham, a resident of Perumal Koil Street in Oragadam, had completed his duty around 5 p.m. and gone to the lake to play at cards with some of his friends.

Around 7 p.m., the police received a call about a man’s body, with his face smashed, lying near the lake. An Ambattur police team reached the spot and identified the body. Following a preliminary probe, the body was sent to Government Kilpauk hospital for post-mortem. Investigators have detained five men on suspicion that they might have killed the elderly guard.

Further investigation is underway.
