Zone 9 of the Greater Chennai Corporation is in the process of re-laying many sections of roads in and around Mylapore as part of its annual exercise to repair damaged roads.

According to a Zone 9 official, 51 roads are being re-laid. Work on 30 of them has been completed; work on the remaining stretches will begin soon.

“Every year, we do a survey of the roads, especially after the monsoon. If the city experiences heavy monsoon, the number of damaged roads goes up. This year, we have fewer damaged roads to attend to than in most of the previous years. We took up the survey in November and started the work in February,” says the official.

The roads will be layered with 40mm bituminous concrete.

Roads such Alamelu Manga Puram, Raja Annamalaipuram, 2nd Trust Main Road (Mandavelipakkam), Nadu Street (Mylapore), Bazaar Road, Boat Club Road in Chamiers Road have been re-laid.

Stretches in Nochikuppam Main Road, Kapali Thottam, Palakkumaniam and a few in R.A. Puram are next in the pipeline. “We hope to complete work on these 11 roads in 15 days,” adds the official.
