Vehicle belonged to jeweller; he had stepped out of car to open gate of his home in T. Nagar

Gold jewellery weighing 5 kg was allegedly stolen by unidentified persons from the car of a jeweller outside his house in Duraisamy Salai, T. Nagar on Friday night. The missing gold is worth over Rs. 1 crore.

Kumar had driven his Hyundai i20 home with a bag containing 600 sovereigns of jewellery after the day’s business and stopped outside his main gate. Without switching off the ignition, he stepped out of the vehicle and opened the gate a few metres in front.

He returned to the car to find the bag with gold, which was on the passenger seat in front, missing, sources added.

Mahesh Kumar reportedly searched the car for the bag and soon combed some of roads he came through in search of the missing bag of gold.

He later approached the Mambalam police and lodged a complaint. A case was registered and a police team investigated the theft.

Investigators are examining the CCTV footage obtained from a few traffic signals on roads enroute to Kumar’s residence through which his car had passed. Footage from the camera placed at an apartment complex in Duraisamy Salai is also being examined. The team has also gathered details of known offenders involved in similar offences.
