Actors Kamal Haasan and Gauthami at a get-together to celebrate the success of the film Papanasam in Chennai on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, writer Suka, who worked with the cast of Kamal Haasan’s recently released Papanasam , introduced the actors dressed as characters at a set resembling a tea shop, police station, and Rani’s Illam. Everyone present in Image Auditorium then thought the actors would be performing in an impromptu play. But that did not happen.

The entire cast and crew of Papanasam turned up dressed as the characters they played in the movie to celebrate the success of the film, which is running to packed houses. Actor Kamal Haasan was all praise for film-maker Jeethu Joseph, who wrote and directed the original Malayalam film, Drishyam . “Despite writing a successful script, he accommodated the creative suggestions while making the film a second time around,” he said.

He also urged the media to identify good movies on time so that those in the industry would be willing to take risks. “These days, I see a lot of people praising my past films on the Internet. If they had seen and supported those films back then, both my producer and I would have benefitted,” he said.

Reacting to the Tamil Nadu government’s decision not to grant entertainment tax exemption to the film, he said, “The basis on which the decision has been made is on their website.” However, he disagreed with the reasons provided. “Suyambulingam as a character thinks that covering up a murder is justified. It does not mean that I am endorsing it,” he said.

Asked about the issues related to Nadigar Sangam, the actor was reluctant to open up, saying that nobody had approached him so far.
