Give 90% of milk to societies, farmers urged

Minister for Dairy Development V. Moorthi has urged chairmen of the 17 district unions to ask milk producing farmers to give 90 per cent of their milk production to the cooperative societies.

The 8,200 societies in the State presently supply 22 lakh litres of milk a day to the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation, popularly known as Aavin.

The Minister and Federation Chairman A. Miller, who recently met officials of the district unions, said that they had been receiving reports that farmers were supplying less than 90 per cent of their produce to the societies. “As per rules, they can sell only 10 per cent of the milk production locally,” explained a source in Aavin.

A press release here said that the office-bearers of the district unions have been asked to meet farmers in person and explain the recent hike in procurement prices, and other schemes . February is a lean season for milk production in the State.
