A five-year-old girl died after she was hit by the school bus door moments after she got down from the vehicle near her house in Alandur on Tuesday evening. S.A. Afrin was a kindergarten student of Unity Matriculation School in Mahalakshmi Nagar, Adambakkam.
On Tuesday, she took the 36-seater school bus home as usual after classes.
After going through several localities in Adambakkam, the bus dropped her at the intersection of Periyapalayathammal Koil Street and Madukkarai Street in Alandur.
The girl got down from the bus and her father, Abbas, was waiting on the opposite side, to take her to their house on Sowri Street in Alandur. Even before the front door of the bus was closed, the driver started the vehicle.
The door slammed on the girl, injuring her in the waist and thighs. She fell on the road and sustained critical injuries. Her father was witness to the accident.
The girl, after being administered first aid, was rushed to the Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital in Nungambakkam, where she succumbed to the injuries. Traffic police have registered a case under Section 304 (a) of Indian Penal Code (causing death by rash and negligence) and arrested the bus driver, M.Hanifa (67).
