A girl child was reported missing at the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital here on Monday. According to police, the child was apparently stolen from the lap of her father, Rajesh Kannan, while he had dozed. Rajesh Kannan (30), who works as a mechanic in Thiruverkadu, had admitted his wife Selvi to the hospital for delivery last week. Selvi had given birth to a girl child on Sunday. The newborn had breathing difficulties and was shifted to the neonatal ward. While Selvi was being tended to by her mother, Rajesh Kannan took care of the older child, Priyadarshini, who was 22 months old.

Around 3 a.m. on Monday, Rajesh Kannan bought milk from the hospital canteen and tried to feed Priyadarshini, who refused to drink the milk and fell asleep. Police said Rajesh Kannan also dozed off with the child in his lap. When he awoke, he found the child missing. Priyadarshini was around 2 feet tall and was wearing coffee-colour dress and pink sweater. She was wearing a yellow woollen cap.
