When it comes to cadaveric organ donations, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (GH) and Government Stanley Hospital are showing the way. With an 11 per cent share each, these hospitals are contributing significantly to the organ pool, say hospital authorities.
A total of 34 hospitals have performed cadaveric transplants benefiting 2,709 people so far. For government hospitals, World Cadaveric Organ Donation Day, which was observed on Tuesday, was an opportunity to evaluate their performance and explore ways to improve awareness among staff.
GH has proposed to put up posters and flex boards on the need for organ donation in its casualty, outpatient wards, laboratories and pharmacies. Neurosurgeons and neurologists will also conduct programmes for patients, said GH dean, V. Kanagasabai.
People can be enthused to donate with proper counselling, said Dr. Kanagasabai. “Even doctors do not have enough awareness about organ donation. We have decided to conduct monthly awareness programmes for doctors, nurses and paramedics all of whom regularly interact with patients,” he said.
