At the age of 16, this girl who aspired to fly high, was chosen to visit NASA. Today, the dreams of this aspiring astronaut lie buried with her. Almost a month after her death, the body of 19-year-old Georgina Thomson reached Chennai Airport on Saturday.
A student of aerospace engineering at University of Liverpool, Georgina allegedly hanged herself on July 12 inside the students’ residence. “I last heard her voice in March. Somehow, both of us were preoccupied and could not speak,” said her father S. Thomson, a city police officer, who wept inconsolably while receiving her body.
Mr. Thomson, who struggled to bring her body back home, said that he was not convinced by the enquiry by England’s Merseyside Police. “They showed me the body only two days after my arrival there. Also, they didn’t provide me with any details or documents with regard to the case. The officials didn’t intimate me when my daughter fell ill three months ago,” he said.
The report of a second post-mortem examination is expected to come in another 10 days, he added.
Georgina’s acquaintances remembered her as a bold girl. “It is unlikely there were any problems in the family that would have led her to take this step. We feel that there was some trouble and the university authorities ignored it. They did not even bother to enquire when she did not attempt two of her exams,” said one of her acquaintances.
