The sight of a two-month-old Indian Gaur, playing with its mother in their enclosure keeps staff at Arignar Anna Zoological Park engaged. The calf was born on July 23 to three-year-old Anushka and four-year-old Kavi, also born in captivity at Vandalur zoo.
The calf, yet to be named, is the latest member to the family of Indian Bison or Gaur, whose strength in the Zoo is now 19.
“The calf is on a special diet that includes coconut, oil cake, bananas, channa and greens in addition to milk. The mother and the calf have been kept away from other animals as a precaution,” said zoo director and additional principal chief conservator of forests, K.S.S.V.P. Reddy. The calf, which weighs 28 kg, and the mother are healthy.
