From dictionaries to audio CDs

The Little Flower Company (Lifco), famous for its low-priced dictionaries and spiritual books, released 30 audio CDs, including those on Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam, Desika Stothram, Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam, on Wednesday.

Speaking after the launch, N. Murali, president of The Music Academy, said Lifco was a household name in the State.

He wondered how the group managed without ever taking a loan in the 85 years of its existence and still continued to publish books at an affordable cost.

He also said the name had grown into an institution like a banyan and benefited hundreds of thousands of people. He said Lifco founder V. Krishnaswami Sarma was a visionary.

Carnatic vocalist Nithyasree Mahadevan, who was also present at the function, said her family’s association with Lifco was from the time of her grandmother D.K. Pattammal. Lifco first launched dictionaries in 1950.

Bharatanatyam dancer Padma Subrahmanyam said Lifco was ageless as the content of its works had eternal value. She suggested the company publish a book of ancient Tamil alphabets.

V.R. Iyer, chairman and managing director, Bank of India, said the Bank’s association with the group was a long one. Actor and orator Sivakumar explained verses from the Sundara Kandam, a publication Lifco is famous for.

Earlier, Carnatic vocalist M. Balamuralikrishna unveiled a portrait of V. Krishnaswami Sarma. Carnatic vocalist Sudha Raghunathan and L. Sabaratinam, chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai, also participated in the function.

T.N.C. Vijayasarathy, chairman, Lifco Group, and Radha Vijayasarathy, managing director, Lifco, also spoke on the occasion.
