The Chennai Corporation has called for fresh tenders for the construction and maintenance of modern bus shelters on the ‘Build-Operate-and-Transfer’ basis. The civic body has identified 129 locations on major roads and this time has increased the advertisement space with two panels. It is offering around 122 sq feet of advertising space.
In October, the civic body’s council had passed a resolution cancelling the previous tender bagged by Jindal Stainless Steel Ltd as it had not taken up the work of installing stainless steel bus shelters.
The successful bidder has a concession period of eight years, during which a certain percentage of advertisement revenue should be given to the civic body. The approximate cost of setting up one shelter is Rs.12 lakh.
Mayor M.Subramanian said that the civic body was looking to give shelters throughout the city a uniform look. “Though we have increased the space available for advertising the shelter will be designed aesthetically like the ones on Kamaraj Salai,” he said.
The shelters should have provision for display of bus numbers, route map, dust bin, clock and seating. The rear side of the advertisement panels have been reserved for use by the Chennai Corporation to display public awareness messages. “We are expecting a good response from companies this time,” said an official of the Corporation.
A pre-bid meeting would be held on December 12 and the last date for submission of bids is January 8. The Chennai Corporation controls around 500 shelters and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation around 1,000 shelters.
