A crime team of St. Thomas Mount police district on Tuesday morning arrested four men on charges of robbing two men of electronic goods and a vehicle in Kathipara a week ago.
Briefing reporters, Chennai Suburban Police Commissioner S. R. Jangid said Krishnamurthy (50), a native of Pudukottai, used to regularly travel to Singapore and Malaysia. He would act as a “courier” (also called ‘kuruvi” in Tamil) and bring electronic appliances and other goods from abroad and deliver them to their purchasers here.
On October 5, he reached Chennai airport by a flight from Singapore. He travelled to the city by a car driven by Khader (35). Near the Kathipara grade separator, the car was taken away by a group of men who identified themselves as officers from the Customs Intelligence.
Clues set the policemen on the trail of several suspects and on Tuesday, the team intercepted a vehicle at Pazhavanthangal. They interrogated two men travelling in it — A. Imran (26) and D. Rajkumar (25) — who confessed to their involvement in the crime. Police picked up two more men P. Albert (20) and A. Noor Mohammed (24). But for a couple of goods, the entire stolen property, including cell phones, digital video and still cameras and latest models of colour TV sets and the stolen vehicle were recovered. Mr. Jangid said they were also searching for the prime accused, ‘Vadakarai' Sakthi, and another accomplice, Surendran. Sakthi, wanted in several heinous crimes, including murder and attempt to murder in Madhavaram police district.
Jewellery recovered
Jewellery weighing 20 sovereigns was recovered following the arrest of three men who were involved in chain-snatching incidents in Chromepet.
V. Varadharaju, Deputy Commissioner of Police, St. Thomas Mount, said K. Nagaraj, G. Murugan and S. Thangaraj, all 21 years old, used to travel on motorcycles and would target women travelling alone.
