A recently-launched mobile app aims to soon upload content less than 10 minutes after it is aired on the telly

You now have another way to catch up on all your favourite television shows, on the tip of your fingers.

While there are myriad avenues for viewers to watch TV programmes, Hotstar, a mobile app launched recently by the Star group of channels, provides options to watch television programmes, sports and movies in different languages.

Star Vijay is one of the channels available online and on the mobile app. While there are a few websites that offer television content, some channels in the West own both the platform and the content.

Sources at Star Vijay said it was imperative to explore the digital space.

“Hotstar is more of an extension of the Star channels. The content produced is being shared on multi-screens, be they television or mobile,” said sources.

As of now, there is a lag in uploading the content online or on mobile applications. “We are aiming at uploading content in less than 10 minutes after it gets aired on television,” said sources.

Binge watching House of Cards 3

The release of the much-awaited House of Cards (season 3) on popular streaming site Netflix, weeks ago, has set off an urge to binge-watch not only the new season but also its previous seasons.

As most popular American-produced television shows are censored considerably and some are broadcast much later than in the West, die-hard fans are watching entire seasons in one go.

“Since there is no access to legal streaming sites like Netflix in India, there is nothing one can do except download the episodes. I watch the episodes whenever I get time,” says Divya, a big fan of popular television series Game of Thrones.

Binge watching is also an option for those who want to catch up with previous seasons.

“If I hear a new season is going to start, I try and watch the season I missed,” says Supriya, who works in the financial sector.
