Around 200 metres of the pavement, along Anna Main Road, near Nesapakkam, is dumped with construction debris and unused concrete pipes, forcing pedestrians to walk in the carriageway.
According to residents, work on laying drainage and water pipelines by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) on Anna Main Road began more than a decade ago, and only a few years ago, it got completed and the stretch was re-laid.
“Once the pipeline-laying work was completed, the construction debris and unused pipes were dumped on the pavement. Either the Chennai Metrowater or the Corporation should clear the footpath,” said C. Srinivasan, a resident of Nesapakkam.
They also complained that the stretch had not been levelled properly and it had witnessed a few cave-ins.
Residents also pointed out that that earlier, a TASMAC shop was located alongside this pavement, near the CMWSSB office. So, many avoided this pavement and used the one on the other side of Anna Main Road. With this pavement not being used by pedestrians, the Metrowater department only found it convenient to dump its construction debris and unused pipes there. Residents added that sand-carrying lorries were also parked on this pavement. Now, as the TASMAC outlet has been relocated elsewhere, pedestrians want to use the footpath, but can’t. “The dumped items will be removed at the earliest,” said a Corporation official.
