The role of the educator is changing. Schools and educators should spot and nurture talent and innovation among their students, M.S. Swaminathan, founder and chairman of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, said.
Citing the lives of Srinivasa Ramanujan and Stephen Hawking, Mr. Swaminathan said, “It was only because they were recognised by an educator that they were able to shine”. He was speaking at the inauguration of the Educators for Change conference organised by Don Bosco School of Excellence here on Friday.
Changes are needed in other areas of education, including the teaching of ecology, equity, ethics, employment and tolerance of diversity, he said. “In a country like India, more attention is needed for first-generation learners,” Mr. Swaminathan added.
Speaking at the event, Sashi Kumar of the Media Development Foundation said, “In the information age, there is a lot of information, but very little knowledge.”
N. Ram, chairman, Kasturi and Sons, released the souvenir of the conference. Jerome Dhas Varuvel, bishop of Kuzhithural, Jayapalan Raphael, provincial, Salesian province of Chennai and John Alexander, rector and correspondent, Don Bosco Egmore, spoke.
The conference will cover a range of topics such as technology in classes, the vanishing art of lecturing, creativity and equity in education.
