The Corporation budget has a host of infrastructure projects in store for the city.

Over Rs. 990 crore will be spent on roads, parks and other works at the zonal level. Stormwater drains have been allocated Rs. 450 crore and bridges, Rs. 31.15 crore.

Proposals for a link road connecting Kaliamman Koil Street and Poonamallee High Road and another connecting Adyar bridge and Kotturpuram are significant. Traffic congestion problems in Koyambedu and Adyar are likely to be eased by the projects.

Mayor Saidai Duraisamy in his budget speech on Monday announced the construction of a bridge across Buckingham Canal to connect Murugesan Nagar in Thoraipakkam and Pandiyan Salai in Neelankarai.

A multi-level car parking facility on Uthamar Gandhi Salai, skywalks in T. Nagar and George Town are other significant proposals.

The skywalk with escalator in the vicinity of George Town will ease congestion caused by visitors to the High Court complex, government offices and shopping complexes. The facility will connect Parry’s Corner to Fort railway station.

The existing 13 flyovers maintained will get a facelift and a bridge will replace LC No. 2A between Korukkupet and Vysarpadi stations on Ennore High Road. Grade separators that will come up on Dr. M.G.R. Salai, Thirumalai Pillai Road and Valluvar Kottam High Road junction and Madhya Kailash junction are likely to ease traffic congestion.

A feasibility study will be conducted and detailed project report prepared for grade separators at the junction of T.T.K. Road-St.Mary’s Road-Chamiers Road and NSK Salai-Virugambakkam Kaliyamman Koil Street Junction.

Pedestrian subways on Purasavakkam High Road (Gangadeeswaran Koil Road) and Konnur High Road-Medavakkam Tank Road junction in Ayanavaram are facilities under feasibility study.

A chunk of the proposals will be implemented based on the feasibility study only. So residents will have to wait for a few more years to enjoy the benefits from many of the announcements.
