After the mandatory 45-day ban on fishing along the east coast, all mechanised boats operating from the fishing harbour in Tharuvaikulam and Vembar are expected to resume operations from Saturday.

To facilitate fish breeding, the Centre imposes the ban on fishing by mechanised boats along the east coast between April 15 and May 29 every year. Consequently, mechanised boats in Tuticorin Fishing Harbour (202 boats), Tharuvaikulam (125), Vembar (30) and Veerapandianpattinam (8) abstained from fishing operations from April 15. Besides painting the boats with green, as mandated by the State government, the boat owners used this period to overhaul the engines and mend the nets.

In this connection, a Holy Mass and special prayers were organised at Tuticorin Fishing Harbour and the boats blessed.
