The Semmanchery police filed First Information Reports (FIRs) against six information technology companies on Sunday for having worked on April 24, when the Lok Sabha elections were conducted.
A police official said two FIRs designated under non-bailable offence were filed against HCL, Wipro, Sodexo New Travel Line, Voltas and First Source on a complaint from the Sholinganallur tahsildar for violation of the Representation of the People Act. While five companies operated in a single complex at Elcot, First Source was located on Rajiv Gandhi Salai, he said.
The FIRs have followed several complaints lodged with the District Election Office by employees of private companies on the day of polling.
On April 2, Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar declared a paid holiday on account of the polls. Asked what action would be taken against IT companies that would not declare a holiday, he pointed to the Labour Commissioner’s office asking all firms and establishments to declare a paid holiday on the day of polling.
He also said provisions of the Representation of People Act, the Negotiable Instruments Act and the Factories Act would be invoked against companies that did not declare a holiday.
