After much delay, the much-awaited convocation for autonomous and affiliated colleges of Anna University was held here on Thursday.
Nearly 110 candidates were awarded gold medals in different undergraduate programmes. As many as 622 PhD candidates and 62 MS/ M.Tech candidates also received awards. The university awarded a total of 1,44,669 degrees. While students of the university departments received the degrees, the certificates of students in affiliated colleges were sent to be distributed, sources said.
Anna University vice-chancellor P. Kaliraj read the placement report and congratulated the meritorious students and their families. Governor K. Rosaiah presided over the function.
UGC chairman Ved Prakash, who delivered the convocation address, urged the graduating students to work hard towards creating an impact in the lives of poor people, and educational institutions to be more inclusive in nature. “Universities need to understand the limitations of every learner. That is why there can be no uniform curriculum. Students come from diverse backgrounds and have different faiths. It is only by interacting that they learn a great deal,” he said.
The proceedings were also webcast on the university website.
