Fill SC/ST vacancies in colleges, says court

July 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Madras High Court has directed the authorities and management of several colleges in the State to fill vacancies in SC and ST categories during the ongoing academic year.

Disposing of a petition by a retired professor I. Elangovan, the First Bench comprising Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam said, “We consider it appropriate to observe that every endeavour should be made to fill both backlog and current vacancies of ST and SC categories, as also the other categories to facilitate the education system.

The endeavour should be to conclude this process during the ongoing academic year.”

The petitioner in his plea sought for a direction to officials and management of several private, aided and non-minority educational institutions to appoint SC and ST candidates as teachers and non-teaching staff in accordance with Rule 11 (1-A) of Tamil Nadu Private Colleges (Regulation) Rules, 1976.

The court made this observation even though it observed that the PIL may not be maintainable after hearing the submissions of the government that necessary orders have been issued to college authorities to fill up vacancies under the said categories.
