The State-wide bandh announced by various farmers associations on March 28 against the construction of a dam at Mekedatu across river Cauvery by the Karnataka government has gained support of major political parties.
The meeting on Saturday was attended by political parties, including the DMK and the PMK.
Even though the CPI (M) did not participate in the meeting of the associations, State secretary of the party G. Ramakrishnan on Sunday extended support to the bandh.
“Despite the opposition from political parties in Tamil Nadu and filing of a petition in the Supreme Court against the dam, the Karnataka government has allotted Rs 25 crore for the project,” alleged Mr. Ramakrishnan.
Cauvery Board
He said even though the final order of the Cauvery Water Tribunal had been published in the gazette, the BJP led government had not taken any effort to constitute the Cauvery Management Board.
PMK leader S. Ramasoss urged the State government to extend support to the bandh, arguing that the farmers association had been forced to take this step as other methods of protest had failed to prevent the Karnataka government.
