Various organisations and groups representing the southern states came together on Friday to present their nominations at the fourth zonal workshop for the revised tentative world heritage list.
Government and private representatives from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Pondicherry and Lakshadweep explained the cultural and historical significance of their respective nominations.
The presentations at the workshop were made to a panel representing the Advisory Committee on World Heritage Matters (ACWHM) associated with the ministry of culture.
While Tamil Nadu presented the largest number of entries, the other States were not far behind. Experts here made a convincing case for Fort St. George, Srirangam temple, Chettinad, Pulicat, Kazhugumalai in Tuticorin, and the Pallava temples, among others.
Among other interesting nominations were the Kakatiya monuments of Andhra Pradesh and the Umbrella Stones in Kerala.
The results of the workshop will be presented at the South Asia Regional Workshop scheduled to be held in New Delhi in September this year. The final recommendations from the workshops will be used to prepare the revised tentative list for India by December.
