Some parts of the city witnessed light showers on Saturday evening after a relatively hot day. And there is a likelihood of rain till Monday.

On Saturday, the weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 36.1 degrees Celsius and 36.5 degrees Celsius respectively.

Some places in the city received close to 1 cm of rain in the evening hours.

Officials of the Meteorological Department said this was due to convective activity that follows a period of scorching heat in the morning. This weather trend will continue till Monday.

Weather blogger Pradeep John, who runs ‘Tamil Nadu Weatherman,’ a popular Facebook page, had written on convective clouds approaching parts of north and western Chennai.

“What we got on Saturday evening was convective rain, which was triggered by strong sea breeze. Residents may expect widespread rain over the city by Monday,” Mr. John said on the page.

The Meteorological Department forecasts that the maximum and minimum temperatures in the city will be 36 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius respectively till Monday.
