One of the compartments of a suburban Electrical Multiple Unit derailed at Ponneri railway station on Thursday evening. No one was hurt.

Railway sources said the EMU left Chennai Central station (suburban Moore Market Complex) for Sulurpetta.

Around 5 p.m., a pair of wheels of the seventh compartment (from the engine) derailed.

A team of engineering staff rushed to the spot and put the compartment back on rails after about one hour. The track was cleared for traffic at 6.30 p.m., officials said, adding that trains from Chennai towards Gudur were delayed for a while.

Earlier this month, the Chennai – Trivandrum Mail and an EMU were involved in a collision following a derailment between Hindu Colony and Pattabhiram railway stations.

A pair of wheels of the seventh compartment derailed at around 5 p.m.
