: The State government has been sending constantly reminding the Centre about the demand to make Tamil the official language of the Madras High Court, Law Minister C.Ve. Shanmugam informed the State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

Replying to DMK legislator K.S. Ravichandran, who, in his speech, Mr. Shanmugam said the demand was reiterated even during the last meeting that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The Chief Minister has written letters to the Centre over the issue and reminders are being sent regularly. On June 6 and 23 and on July 23, reminder letters were sent to the Centre over the issue,” Mr. Shanmugam said.

Despite the full Bench of the Supreme Court rejecting the demand in 2013, “continuous efforts were being made to place the issue before a full Bench,” the Minister added.

Meanwhile, the policy note of the Department of Administration of Law tabled in the House stated, “As this is a long-standing aspiration and demand of this State, the Government of India has been addressed again. The Government of India has informed in their letter dated September 8, 2015 that the matter is to be placed before the full court of the Supreme Court of India.”
