Educationist passes away

C. Prema Kumar, honourary general secretary of the Madras Seva Sadan, died on Friday. She was 67.

A noted educationist, Ms. Prema was the correspondent of the Madras Seva Sadan Higher Secondary Schools at Chetpet and Tambaram.

A multi-purpose social welfare and charitable organisation which was founded in 1928, the Madras Seva Sadan also runs an orphanage, an old age home, a rehabilitation home for the mentally retarded and a centre for visually challenged children.

She was also the correspondent of the Madras Seva Sadan Industrial School in Chetpet from 1976 to 2011.

Ms. Prema went on to establisj the Lady Andal Venkatasubba Rao Matriculation Higher Secondary School in 1987 and was the institution’s correspondent since.

In 2012, she started the Sir Mutha School (CBSE) and was the correspondent for it as well. An active member of Soroptimist International, she was the Chennai chapter’s president from 2006 to 2007 and contributed to their advocacy and awareness activities.

A governing council member of the Tamil Nadu State Chapter of the International Society for Technology in Education, Ms Prema had also been a member of the National Association for the Blind. Passionate about inclusive education, she was the recipient of several awards, including the Sheroes Award in 2014, Bharathi Award for Social Service and the Outstanding Woman Achiever award presented by the Tamil Nadu M.G.R. Medical University.

A prayer meeting was held in her remembrance on Friday evening.
