A 62-year-old man, who was drunk, murdered his son in his house on Paper Mills Road in Thiru Vi Kaa Nagar on Monday night. Police said that the man was infuriated when his son abused him during an argument about the latter’s refusal to take up a job.
The victim, N. Yogeshwaran (43), a goldsmith, was the son of S. Natarajan (63), who used to work as a watchman in a private firm and now, sells tea in the neighbourhood. Until a few years ago, Yogeshwaran worked as a goldsmith near his house in MGR Nagar but left work due to alcoholism. As he often came home drunk, his wife Vimala and their two daughters left him two years ago. They now stay at her mother’s house in K.K. Nagar. Since then, Yogeshwaran would visit his parents’ house in Thiru Vi Kaa Nagar often.
A couple of days ago, Yogeshwaran came to his parents’ house for the Ayudha Pooja celebrations. On Monday night, around 10.30 p.m., Natarajan, who was drunk, demanded that Yogeshwaran find some work and bring his wife and children back home.
Soon, an argument ensued and Yogeshwaran abused his father for asking him to go work and demanded that his parents support him until he decided to get a job.
An angry Natarajan, who was sharpening a small knife on a concrete slab, suddenly stabbed his son on the throat. Immediately, Natarajan, his wife and neighbours rushed Yogeshwaran to Government Stanley Hospital, where he was declared ‘brought dead’.
A special police team led by the assistant police commissioner (Sembium), R. Vijayaraghavan, inspected the crime spot, took fingerprints and later, arrested Natarajan. A case of murder under section 302 of IPC was registered by Thiru Vi Kaa Nagar police. “Natarajan did not realise that he had killed his son and kept crying and begging us to save his son,” said a police officer.
